Lighting and Electrical Choices

Lighting and Electrical Choices

We made very few changes to the basic lighting that came with our house.

I love lighting and eventually we will put in exactly what we want, but this will do for now.

It is all in Brushed Nickel finish. Not a fan, but it gets us in the house and we will take our time finding what we love to replace it.

Lighting Plan - Project Small House: Building our Schumacher Home
Lighting Plan

We will walk through with the electrician and let him know where we actually want lighting. Mostly the plan is what we want, but not exactly.

We also made sure we have plenty of three-way switches.

This is the package from Schumacher.

Lighting

Your home will have three recessed lights in your kitchen, your choice of the location.

The exterior lighting package is in antique bronze finish. It includes one coach light at the front door, two garage coach lights and one light at the door from the carport to the garage. They are all made by Progress Lighting.

Indoor Lighting

The indoor lighting is the Bravo Collection by Progress Lighting. It is all in Brushed Nickel with White Etched Glass. I would call the style Transitional.

The foyer, den/loft (wherever that is), hallway, laundry room, our closet, foyer closet and all three bedrooms get the Bravo P3925-09ET ceiling light.

Width/Diameter: 13-1/4″, Height: 5-7/8″

The dining room gets the Bravo P4622-09, a 4-light chandelier. We are bringing our chandelier with us and we have ordered a great orb chandelier to put in the log cabin. I guess we will sell this one.

Width/Diameter: 24″, Height: 21″

Both bathrooms get the P2006-09 3-light bath fixtures.

Width/Diameter: 26-3/4″, Height: 8-3/4″

I see no mention of the pendants over the bar. I know we talked about them, but I don’t see them on the contract. Anyway, we are bringing ours with us. If the electrician won’t wire them for some reason, I’m sure Cliff will. We’ll cross that bridge. Maybe that is part of the electrical walk-through.

The door from the carport to the garage gets a P5607-20.

Width/Diameter: 4″, Height: 8-5/8″

I don’t care for these, but they could be worse. I haven’t decided on anything else, yet.

We are having two lighted ceiling fans on the back porch. We are buying them and the electrician is installing them.

We also picked the color of our switch plate and outlet covers. We selected Dark Almond. It coordinates with our paint color.

Changes

Our changes to the electric plan - Project Small House
Our changes to the electric plan

These are the changes we are going to make to the electric plan.

I ordered different lights for the front of the house. I got a pendant for the front porch and larger lights for by the garage door. I’ll add photos when they come in.

The plan called for a switched outlet in the living room. I don’t like switched outlets. They kinda drive me crazy. When you hit the wall switch, the lamp is turned off; when you try to switch on the lamp, the wall switch is turned off. So that switch will control the three pendants over the island. We will probably change that to a dimmer. I also added an outlet in the floor for table lamps next to the sofa facing the future fireplace.

We are adding motion detectors to the corners. One will allow us to get up the back steps at night without killing ourselves. It is outside our bedroom window, so we want to be able to switch it off easily on windy nights. The others will be switched as you walk in from the garage.

The flood light is to light the field. We want that one to just switch on and off. No motion detector.

The way the plan is, the hall light by the linen closet would be blocked by the closet door. It can’t be in a better location because that is where the pull down attic stairs are. So I would like to put the light on the wall inside the closet over the door instead. If there isn’t enough room for a switch on the wall, a pull chain will be just fine.

The plan calls for a lot of lights in the hallway. I only left one. We will put a pendant in the foyer.

We have picked out the pendant for the foyer. It coordinates beautifully with the pendants and chandelier we already have.

I don’t like a ceiling light in my office. But I added an additional outlet.

I added outlets in the island. That is where I will set up buffets and I have electric chafing dishes I will want to plug in.

I added another outlet on the other side of the bed. There was only one. Really? Everybody has bedside lamps and a clock. And you want to plug in your phones.

I added outlets to the laundry room. There was only one! I plan to use this as a sewing room. And I will iron in there. And I want to put the freezer there.

The plan showed an outlet in the tub. Perhaps that was to exercise the life insurance on our mortgage. I moved it.
