Buy a Shed Already Converted into a Home for Less

Have you considered buying a shed to turn into a home? A lot of people are using a shed as somewhere to stay temporarily after a natural disaster. Others are looking for a way to save money on rent or house payments. Whether your plan to live in a shed house is temporary or a long term arrangement, you might be surprised at how much it will cost to make it livable. The shed may be a lot less expensive than a house, but construction materials still cost a lot.

Some are completely finished and someone has already been living in them. Others are half finished, but you can still save a lot because they have already purchased the supplies you will need to make the shed a home.

Sometimes people have been living in the shed while they work on it.

I am not going to make any comments on zoning and legalities in this post. It’s on you to find out what your local area is going to have a problem with.

You can usually buy the shed with the construction materials the seller has already purchased for less than it will cost you to buy just a shed.

Shed Conversions

One advantage of starting with a shed is that the outsides are already finished. No matter how much is done or not done inside, at least there is nothing you have to do on the outside.

You can find second hand shed conversions in all different sizes. This little shed is actually completely finished inside. It is insulated and has heat, air conditioning, a tiny kitchen with a fridge and a bathroom.

Most sheds I have seen converted into a house have a gambrel or barn style roof. It will give you a little extra room inside.

There is still plenty of work to do, but not as much as if you bought a new shed and started from scratch.

Some sheds have high enough roofs to have a loft that could conceivably be a bed, but not many. This loft is over the front porch. That loft floor is going to be cold when it’s cold out.
