More Progress on the Engineered Footers
Monday morning, March 5, they were out early and making good progress.
The footers were so caved in and such a mess at this point, they kept re-surveying and checking to be sure they were following the new plan.
They created a “well” and put a pump in it to keep moving the water out of the footers as they worked.
The engineer came out a few times and checked on things. I’m not sure if he made any changes as we went. There is a new report, but I haven’t seen it yet.
Tuesday was really cold and windy. Then it started to rain. They started to work, but the treads kept getting glued down in the mud. He pushed the scoop down to pull the treads out and the scoop just pushed in. Finally they gave up for the day. They were almost to the end. Only the piers for the porch and carport and another twenty feet still to dig out for the footers to go. It rained steady all day.
I checked back a few times. As far as I could tell, things looked right. The “well” seems to work as intended. But the footer walls were caving in again.
Wednesday, the 7th, I woke up to snow flurries. Oh no! It was snowing like crazy at 7:00AM, but nothing was sticking. I was really concerned, but the guys showed up.
They got the final bits dug and cleaned up where more had caved in over what they had already done. It wasn’t too bad. Another couple of loads of gravel were delivered and they scooped it in.
They told me that the inspector would be there on Thursday, then they could pour the cement!!!
Concrete or cement? Which word is correct?
Cement is an ingredient of concrete. Concrete is cement mixed with rocks, gravel, whatever your recipe calls for. Our house has gravel, sand and fiber added to the cement.
